Whirlpool washer error codes: what each family of codes points to
Washer & Dryer

Codes about draining
These appear when the machine does not reach a dry sump within the expected time. Nine times out of ten the cause is a blocked pump filter or a drain hose pushed too far into the standpipe, which creates a siphon. Both are owner-checkable. A pump that hums without moving water is the less common case.
Codes about filling
The machine expected a certain water level within a time window and did not get it. Check that both supply valves are fully open and the inlet screens are not blocked with sediment — Chicagoland water leaves noticeable mineral deposits on those screens. If supply is fine, the inlet valve or the pressure sensor is the suspect.
Codes about lid lock or door lock
The machine will not agitate or spin unless it confirms the lid is locked. On top-loaders the lock assembly is a wear part and fails after enough cycles. This code sometimes appears intermittently first, which is a useful early warning.
Codes about unbalanced loads
A single heavy item, a bath mat or a duvet, moves to one side and the machine repeatedly re-attempts the spin. This is a load problem, not a fault. If it happens with balanced loads too, the suspension rods or the shock absorbers have worn and the tub is no longer centring itself.
Codes about the motor or control
These are the ones worth calling about. They can mean the drive motor, the motor control unit, or the wiring between them. Testing requires a meter and access to the harness, and the parts involved are the most expensive in the machine — a confirmed diagnosis matters here more than anywhere else.
Frequently asked questions
Will unplugging the washer clear the code?
It clears the display, not the cause. If the fault condition is still present the code returns on the next cycle. It is worth doing once to rule out a transient glitch.
Are error codes the same across all Whirlpool models?
The families are consistent, the exact codes are not. The model number on the door frame or the tub rim is what identifies the correct chart.
