Preparing appliances for winter, holidays, and long vacations
Maintenance

Before winter: protect anything near an exterior wall
Water lines running through unheated garages, crawlspaces, or exterior walls are the freeze risk. Insulate exposed supply lines to a garage refrigerator or utility sink, and know where the shutoff for each is. Refrigerators and freezers in unheated garages struggle in deep cold too, since the thermostat may stop calling for cooling and the freezer compartment thaws.
Before winter: check the dryer vent termination
The exterior dryer vent flap is a favorite winter entry point for cold air and small animals, and lint plus condensation freezes into the cap. Confirm the flap opens fully and closes tightly. A vent that stays partly open pulls cold air into the laundry room all season and drives up heating costs.
Before hosting: stress-test the kitchen a week early
Run the oven at high temperature for an hour and confirm it holds the setting. Test every burner and igniter. Run a full dishwasher cycle and check for standing water. Clean the hood filters, since holiday cooking generates far more grease and smoke than a normal week. Finding a problem seven days out means you have options rather than an emergency.
Before hosting: give the refrigerator room to work
A fridge crammed to capacity with the door opened constantly runs much harder than usual. Clear space beforehand, vacuum the coils, and avoid stacking hot dishes directly inside since that raises the whole cabinet temperature. If you use a second refrigerator only for holidays, power it on two full days ahead so it reaches temperature.
Before a long vacation: water and power
Close the shutoff valves to the washing machine, dishwasher, and refrigerator ice maker. Supply-line failures while nobody is home are among the most damaging household water events. Unplug small countertop appliances, and if you leave the house cold, be aware that a fridge in a very cool house will cycle less and may run warm inside.
Before a long vacation: what to do with the refrigerator
For trips under about three weeks, leave the refrigerator running, empty the perishables, and turn off the ice maker so it does not fill a bin with fused ice. For longer absences, consider emptying it, unplugging, and propping both doors open to prevent mold. Run the dishwasher empty and leave the door ajar so its sump does not sit full and sour.
Frequently asked questions
Should I turn off my water main when traveling?
If nothing depends on it, yes. It is the most reliable protection against a supply-line or water heater failure while you are away.
Will my garage refrigerator survive a Midwest winter?
Standard models may not hold freezer temperature below about 38 degrees F ambient. Garage-ready units are built with a heater to handle it.
How far ahead should I book holiday appliance service?
Two to three weeks before a major holiday. Parts orders and schedules both tighten sharply in the final week.
