Common washer error codes and what they actually mean

Photo: Sarah Chai / Pexels Error codes are genuinely useful once you know what they point to. Most flag a condition rather than a specific broken part, which means a code often has both a simple cause you can fix and a component cause that needs a technician. Here are the ones we see most.
Drain codes: OE, 5E, F21, nd
These all mean the machine did not reach an empty tub within the expected time. Check the drain pump filter, the drain hose for kinks, and the standpipe for a house-side clog before suspecting the pump itself. If the pump is silent during a drain cycle, or grinds, then the pump or its wiring is the fault. This family of codes is the most common overall.
Fill codes: IE, 4E, F8 E1, LF
The washer did not reach its target water level in time. Confirm both supply valves are fully open, then check the inlet screens where the hoses attach to the machine, which clog with sediment and are easy to rinse. Beyond that, the cause is usually a failed inlet valve solenoid or a pressure switch and air hose reading the level incorrectly.
Door and lid codes: dE, DL, F5 E2, LID
The control cannot confirm the door is locked. On front-loaders, check that nothing is caught in the boot and that the door closes with a firm click. Repeated failures usually mean a worn door interlock assembly, a stretched strike, or a cracked hinge causing misalignment. On top-loaders it is typically a lid switch or a magnet that shifted out of position.
Balance codes: UE, uB, dc, F7
The drum could not balance for the spin. A single bulky item or a tangled sheet is the usual cause, so redistribute the load and retry. Persistent codes with normal loads point to worn suspension rods or shock absorbers, an unlevel machine, or leveling feet that never got locked down after installation.
Suds codes: Sud, 5d, SdS
Excess foam is preventing the pump from moving water and cushioning the drum during spin. It comes from non-HE detergent, too much detergent, or very soft water. The machine will typically pause and run extra rinses on its own. Cut the dose to about a tablespoon for a normal load and confirm the detergent is labeled HE.
Motor, heater, and board codes: LE, 8E, F06, HE
These flag hardware faults such as a locked rotor, a failed hall sensor, a bad heating element, or a communication failure between boards. There is no homeowner fix. Before you call, write down the exact code and the model number from the sticker inside the door, which lets the technician arrive with the right part on the truck.
