Ice maker not making ice? Work through these checks first
An ice maker that has quit is annoying out of proportion to its size. The good news is that the failure list is short and several items on it cost nothing to check. Work through these in order and you will either fix it or know exactly what to tell the technician.
The shutoff arm or sensor
Start with the embarrassing one. Every ice maker has a way to stop producing when the bin is full: a wire bail arm you can lift, or an infrared beam across the bin on newer models. A bag of frozen peas can hold the arm up, and a frost-covered IR window reads as a full bin. Lower the arm, wipe the sensor windows, and wait a cycle.
Freezer temperature
Ice makers will not cycle if the freezer is not cold enough. The thermostat in the ice maker module typically needs to reach around 15°F before it will harvest. If your freezer is sitting at 20-25°F, the ice maker is a symptom, not the problem, and you should chase the cooling issue first. Verify with a thermometer, not the display.
Water supply and inlet valve
Check the saddle or shutoff valve behind the fridge or under the sink, and confirm it is fully open. Then listen during a fill: you should hear a distinct buzz for five to eight seconds. A silent valve with power means a failed water inlet valve, typically $175-$300 installed. Low household pressure below 20 psi will also produce short, undersized cubes.
A frozen fill tube
The small tube that delivers water into the ice mold can freeze solid, usually because the valve leaks slightly between cycles or the freezer runs too cold. You will often see a mound of ice at the back of the ice maker. Thawing it with a hair dryer on low restores operation temporarily, but a leaking valve will refreeze it, so treat the cause.
The water filter
A filter past its service life restricts flow enough to starve the ice maker, and this is one of the most common causes of hollow, small or partial cubes. Replace filters every six months regardless of what the indicator light says. Also confirm the filter is fully seated and that you installed a compatible cartridge, since poorly fitting aftermarket filters restrict flow.
The ice maker module itself
If water fills the mold correctly but the cubes never eject, the module motor, thermostat or ejector gears have failed. These are typically replaced as a complete assembly rather than by individual part, and the job usually runs $250-$450 installed depending on brand. It is a straightforward repair and rarely worth replacing the whole refrigerator over.
Give it time before judging
A healthy ice maker produces roughly 8-12 cubes per cycle and 2-4 pounds per day, taking about 90 minutes to two hours per cycle. After any fix, or after a new installation, allow a full 24 hours before deciding it did not work. Discard the first two or three batches, which pick up plastic and dust from the lines.
