The cycle works, but it pushes components far past their normal operating range. Understanding what is at risk lets you decide whether to run it and how to reduce the odds of a failure.
What actually happens during self-clean
The oven locks the door and heats the cavity to roughly 850 to 900 degrees for two to four hours, incinerating food residue to a fine ash. Nothing sprays, nothing is added. It is pure pyrolysis. That temperature is more than double normal baking heat, and every wire, sensor, and board near the cavity has to survive it.
The thermal fuse is the most common casualty
Many ovens include a one-shot thermal fuse that opens permanently if temperatures exceed a threshold. When it blows, the oven goes completely dead after the cycle, often with no error code at all. Heat migrates to the control board behind the front panel and to the door lock assembly. Boards fail outright or start behaving erratically afterward. Door lock motors seize with the door still latched, which leaves you with an oven you cannot open. Steps that cut the risk substantially
Scrape out large debris and any pooled grease first, since less material means less smoke and less extra heat. Remove all racks unless yours are specifically rated for self-clean, because the finish discolors and they can bind in the guides. Run the shortest cycle option available, typically two hours, rather than the maximum.
Ventilation and pets
The cycle produces smoke and fumes, and the fumes from burning residue and heavy grease are genuinely dangerous to birds. Move birds out of the house entirely, not just the kitchen. Open windows, run the range hood on high, and do not run the cycle right before guests arrive or overnight while everyone is asleep.
Steam clean as the gentler alternative
Many newer ovens offer a steam clean cycle that runs around 250 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes with water in the cavity floor. It will not touch heavy baked-on carbon, but it loosens light soil and puts almost no thermal stress on components. For routine cleaning every few weeks it is a better habit than an annual scorched-earth self-clean.
Manual cleaning done right
A paste of baking soda and water left on the cavity overnight, then wiped out, handles most soil without chemicals or heat. Avoid oven cleaner sprays on the door gasket, the temperature sensor probe, and any visible heating element, since the caustic residue damages all three. Never spray cleaner into the vent openings.
