Miele dishwasher faults: reading the machine before replacing parts

Miele machines are built to shut down rather than run damaged, so a stopped cycle is frequently the machine protecting itself rather than a failure. Understanding what triggers that protection changes how the fault is approached.

The waterproof system has tripped

Miele dishwashers include a base tray with a float switch. If any water reaches that tray, the machine cuts the supply and stops. The machine is behaving correctly — the job is finding the leak that filled the tray, which is usually a hose connection, the sump seal or the door gasket. Resetting without finding the source simply repeats the event.

Cycle stops partway with water in the tub

The drain is being obstructed or the machine is not confirming drainage. The filter assembly unscrews by hand and is the first place to look; food debris and, on older installations, a small amount of scale build up there. The non-return valve in the drain path is the next check.

Poor drying results

Miele condensation drying relies on the tub being hot at the end of the cycle and the load being loaded so water can run off. A drop in drying performance is usually rinse aid, loading, or a cycle that ends cooler than it should. It is rarely a broken part, which is why the first visit often involves adjustment rather than replacement.

Intake or drain fault on a new installation

On recently installed machines, the cause is frequently the installation itself: a drain hose without the required high loop, or an inlet hose kinked behind the machine. It is worth ruling those out before treating it as a machine fault.

Frequently asked questions

Do Miele parts have to come from Miele?

For the sealed and safety components, yes — the tolerances and the waterproof system are matched to the machine. For consumables such as filters, aftermarket options exist but vary in quality.

The machine works but the display shows a fault. Should I keep using it?

If the fault relates to the waterproof system, no. Continuing to run it risks water damage. Other informational codes are less urgent but should still be diagnosed.
