Front-loaders seal tightly and hold small amounts of water in several places, and those pockets grow biofilm over time. A thorough one-time cleaning plus a simple routine solves it in nearly every case.
Clean the door boot thoroughly
Pull back the rubber gasket at the door opening and look at the underside fold. This is where hair, lint, and detergent sludge collect, and it is the number one source of the smell. Wipe it with a cloth and a diluted bleach solution or a household disinfectant, working all the way around, and dry it. Check for a drain hole in the fold and clear it.
Empty and clean the drain pump filter
The filter behind the small lower front door holds standing water and trapped debris between uses. If it has never been opened, expect a strong odor when you do. Lay towels first, drain through the small hose if your model has one, then rinse the filter and swab the housing. Doing this quarterly removes a major reservoir for bacteria.
Pull the detergent dispenser
The dispenser drawer usually releases with a tab in the center compartment. Underneath and behind it, softener residue builds into a slick pink or black film that never dries out. Soak the drawer in hot water, scrub the siphon caps, and use a bottle brush inside the housing cavity. Rinse and dry before reinstalling.
Run a tub clean cycle correctly
Use the dedicated tub clean or sanitize cycle with an appliance cleaner tablet or about a cup of bleach in the drum, never with clothes inside. Do not mix bleach and vinegar. Run it monthly. If your machine has no tub clean setting, use the hottest, longest cycle available with an extra rinse.
Fix the habits that cause it
Leave the door and the dispenser drawer ajar between loads so the interior can dry. Move wet laundry out promptly instead of letting it sit overnight. Use only HE detergent and only the dose the label calls for, because excess suds leave residue that feeds biofilm. Cut back or drop liquid fabric softener, which is a major contributor.
When cleaning does not fix it
If the odor returns within days of a full cleaning, water is likely sitting somewhere you cannot reach, typically the outer tub or a sagging sump hose, or the drain hose is installed without a proper high loop and sewer gas is backing up. Both are worth a technician visit, and the drain hose routing is often a quick correction.
