Bosch dishwasher not draining: working through it in order
Advice
Photo: Castorly Stock / Pexels A Bosch dishwasher that will not drain is one of the most common calls there is, and it is also one where the cause is frequently something an owner can resolve. The path the water takes is short, so working along it in order finds the restriction quickly.
The filter assembly
The filter twists out by hand from the base of the tub. It collects food debris, and on machines that mostly run short cycles it fills faster than owners expect. A clogged filter slows drainage before stopping it, so performance declines over weeks. This is the first check because it costs nothing and resolves a large share of cases.
The drain hose and its high loop
Bosch requires the drain hose to rise above the connection point before dropping to the disposal or standpipe. Without that loop, water siphons back into the tub and it looks like a drainage failure. On new installations and after a disposal replacement, this is the first thing to verify.
The disposal knockout plug
When a dishwasher is connected to a new garbage disposal, the knockout plug inside the disposal inlet must be removed. If it was not, the dishwasher cannot drain at all. This produces a complete blockage from day one rather than a gradual decline, which is a useful distinguishing detail.
The drain pump
If the filter, hose and connection are clear, the pump is next. A pump that hums without moving water is often jammed by a fragment of glass or a fruit pit rather than failed outright. Clearing it is sometimes possible; a pump that is electrically dead is replaced.
When the machine is protecting itself
Some Bosch models detect water in the base tray and stop the cycle. If the machine stops and will not restart, look for a leak underneath rather than treating it as a drain fault — the two symptoms look identical from the front.
Frequently asked questions
Can I run the disposal to clear the dishwasher drain?
Running the disposal before starting the dishwasher is good practice, and it clears the shared drain path. It will not clear a blockage inside the dishwasher itself.
Is standing water in the bottom always a fault?
No. A small amount at the sump is by design and keeps the seal from drying out. Water above the filter is the sign of a problem.
