How often a range hood filter actually needs cleaning
Maintenance
Photo: Kampus Production / Pexels A range hood that has lost its pull, hums louder than it used to, or leaves a film on nearby cabinets is usually not broken. It is working against a filter that has stopped letting air through, and the motor is straining to do a job it is no longer able to do.
Mesh and baffle filters are washable, and should be washed
Aluminium mesh and stainless baffle filters are designed to be removed and cleaned repeatedly. How often depends entirely on how you cook: frying and high-heat searing load a filter far faster than boiling and simmering. A practical rule is monthly for a kitchen that fries regularly and every couple of months for one that does not — and if you can see the grease rather than just feel it, you have left it too long.
Charcoal filters are not washable
Ductless hoods that recirculate air use a charcoal filter to absorb odour, and washing one ruins it. These are replaced rather than cleaned. If your hood vents outside, you will not have one; if it blows air back into the room, you will, and a saturated charcoal filter is the usual reason a recirculating hood stops controlling smells.
What a clogged filter costs you
Airflow drops first, then noise rises as the motor works harder, and eventually grease that should have been caught passes into the duct and onto the fan. A blade coated in grease goes out of balance, which is heard as vibration and shortens the motor’s life. Cleaning a filter is a dishwasher cycle; cleaning a duct and a fan assembly is a service call.
Washing them properly
Most mesh and baffle filters go in the dishwasher on a hot cycle, though repeated cycles will dull aluminium over time. By hand, hot water with degreasing dish soap and a soak is more effective than scrubbing. Let them drain and dry completely before refitting, because a wet filter picks up dust immediately.
When it really is the hood
If a clean filter has not restored the pull, the next candidates are the duct run and the motor. A damper flap stuck shut, a crushed flexible duct, or a blocked exterior cap will all strangle a perfectly healthy fan. Those are worth checking before anyone concludes the motor has failed.
Frequently asked questions
Can I put hood filters in the dishwasher?
Mesh and baffle filters, yes, on a hot cycle. Charcoal filters, no — they are replaced, not washed. Repeated dishwasher cycles may discolour aluminium without affecting how it works.
Why does my hood smell even though it runs?
On a recirculating hood, a saturated charcoal filter. On a ducted hood, grease in the duct or a blocked exterior vent cap. Either way the fan can be working perfectly and still not clear the air.
