Front-load washer smells musty: why it happens and what actually fixes it
Maintenance

Those are all good things, and together they create the exact conditions where biofilm grows. The smell is a design consequence, not a fault — and it responds well to a small routine.
Where the smell actually comes from
The door gasket has a fold that traps water, lint and detergent residue. That fold is the primary source. The detergent drawer and the drain pump filter are secondary sources. The wash cycle never fully flushes any of them, so residue accumulates whatever cycle you use.
Too much detergent makes it worse
Modern machines use a fraction of the water older ones did, and most people still measure detergent by habit. Excess detergent does not rinse away; it stays as a film that feeds the biofilm. Reducing the dose is often the single most effective change, and it costs nothing.
Cleaning the gasket properly
Pull the fold of the gasket back and wipe all the way around, including the bottom where water pools. This is where the majority of the odour lives, and it is the step most often skipped. Doing it every few weeks prevents the problem rather than treating it.
The drain pump filter
Behind a small access panel at the front bottom sits a filter that traps coins, lint and hair. On many machines it has never been opened. It holds standing water between washes, and if it is dirty it will smell regardless of how clean the gasket is.
Leaving the door open
A sealed drum stays damp for hours after a cycle. Leaving the door and the detergent drawer ajar lets both dry out, and it is the habit that keeps the problem from returning. Everything else on this list is remedial; this one is preventive.
Frequently asked questions
Do washing machine cleaning tablets work?
They help with build-up inside the drum and hoses. They do not reach the gasket fold, which needs wiping by hand, so they work best combined with that.
Will a hot wash cycle fix it?
A periodic hot cycle with the drum empty helps considerably. It is worth running monthly, particularly if most of your washing is done cold.
