Maytag washer not spinning: load, lid lock, drain or drive

A washer that fills and agitates but will not spin has narrowed the problem down for you already: the motor and controls work. What remains is the small set of conditions the machine requires before it is willing to spin at speed.

It will not spin because it cannot drain

Most machines will not spin with water in the tub. So a spin failure is very often a drain failure wearing a different mask. Check the pump filter and the drain hose first — if water is still in the tub when the cycle ends, this is your answer and the spin system is fine.

The lid lock is not confirming

For safety the machine must confirm the lid is locked before spinning at speed. The lock assembly is a wear item and its failure is often intermittent at first — spinning some cycles and not others. That intermittency is a useful diagnostic detail rather than a confusing one.

The load is genuinely unbalanced

A single heavy item pushed to one side makes the machine slow, redistribute and retry, sometimes several times before abandoning the spin. If it only happens with bulky items, that is normal behaviour. If it happens with ordinary loads, the suspension has worn and the tub is no longer self-centring.

The drive system

On direct-drive machines, spin failure can mean the rotor, stator or the shifter that switches between agitate and spin. On belt-driven models, a stretched or broken belt produces exactly this symptom. Both need the machine opened, and both are worth confirming before ordering parts.

Clothes still soaking after a completed spin

The machine spun, but not at full speed. That points to a load imbalance the machine worked around, a partially blocked drain, or bearing wear adding drag. Bearing failure usually announces itself with noise well before this stage.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rebalance the load and continue?

Yes, and it is always worth trying first. Redistribute the load by hand, close the lid and restart the spin. If it completes, the machine did its job.

My washer walks across the floor during spin. Is that the same problem?

Related. Check that the machine is level and the feet are locked. If it is level and still moves, the suspension or shock absorbers have worn.
