How to clean refrigerator condenser coils (and why it matters)
If you do one thing for your refrigerator this year, make it this. Condenser coils shed the heat your fridge pulls out of your food, and when they are blanketed in dust and pet hair they cannot do that job. The compressor then runs longer and hotter to compensate, which is how a free chore turns into a $900 repair.
Where your coils actually are
On most units built since roughly 2010, the coils sit behind a removable grille at the bottom front, which makes access easy. Older and some side-by-side models mount them on the back wall of the cabinet, requiring you to pull the fridge out. A few premium built-ins put them up top behind a front grille. Check the manual or look for the grille first.
What you need
A vacuum with a crevice tool, a long flexible coil brush (about $10-$15 at any hardware store), a flashlight and a screwdriver for the grille. Skip compressed air indoors, because it blows dust deeper into the coil fins and all over your kitchen. A damp cloth is useful for the drip pan and the floor underneath once you are done.
The actual process
Unplug the refrigerator first, always. Remove the base grille, then brush along the coil fins in the direction they run rather than across them, so you do not bend them. Vacuum up what the brush frees, working front to back. Reach in and clean the condenser fan blade too, since dust on the blade unbalances it and causes noise. Reinstall the grille and plug back in.
How often to do it
Twice a year is the right cadence for most homes. Go quarterly if you have shedding pets, run a workshop or garage unit, or live with carpet near the kitchen. A useful check: put your hand near the base grille while the compressor runs. Strong warm airflow is healthy. Weak airflow with a hot cabinet side means it is overdue.
What clean coils buy you
A choked condenser raises head pressure and forces longer run times, which shows up on your electric bill and as a compartment that will not hold temperature in summer. Clean coils also let the compressor cycle off, which is what actually extends its life. Many no-cooling calls in July turn out to be nothing more than a coil packed with dust.
While you are down there
Empty and wipe out the drip pan, which sits under the unit and collects defrost water. Standing water there grows mold and produces a musty smell that people mistake for spoiled food. Check that the pan is seated properly, since a shifted pan is a very common rattle source. Sweep or mop the floor before sliding the fridge back into place.
Coils that need a professional
Some built-in and integrated columns have coils that are genuinely difficult to reach without removing panels, and a few models route the condenser inside the cabinet skin where it cannot be cleaned at all. If your grille will not come off, or you find oily grime rather than dry dust on the fins, stop and book service rather than forcing anything.
