Dryer vent hazards in older Chicago homes: what to check this year

Laundry in an older Chicago home is often in a basement corner far from any exterior wall, which means the vent has to travel a long way with several elbows to get outside. Every foot and every bend adds resistance. Lint that would have blown clear in a short straight run settles instead, and over years it accumulates into a genuine fire hazard and a serious energy cost.

Why run length matters more than people expect

Manufacturers rate a typical dryer for roughly 25 to 35 equivalent feet of vent. Each 90-degree elbow counts as about five extra feet, and each 45-degree bend about two and a half. A basement run of 20 actual feet with four elbows is already at or past the limit before you account for a partially blocked exterior flap.

The symptoms that come before a failure

Clothes still damp after a full cycle, a laundry room that feels hot and humid during a load, a burning smell, or a dryer cabinet that is uncomfortably hot to touch all point to restricted airflow. So does a high-limit thermostat that keeps tripping and shutting off the heat mid-cycle. These are airflow symptoms, not heating element symptoms, and replacing the element will not fix them.

Flexible foil duct is the usual culprit

The thin flexible foil or plastic duct sold at hardware stores is convenient and is exactly what lint catches on. Its ridged interior traps fibers, and it crushes easily when the dryer is pushed back against the wall. Rigid or semi-rigid metal duct has a smooth interior, resists crushing, and is what most manufacturers and local codes call for on anything but the shortest final connection.

Check the exterior termination, not just the hose

Most of the worst blockages we find are at the outside vent hood, where a spring-loaded flap has seized with lint and moisture or a bird has nested behind it. On a cold day, step outside during a dry cycle. You should feel strong warm airflow. Weak or no airflow with the dryer running means the blockage is downstream of anything you can reach from inside.

Never vent a dryer indoors

Indoor lint traps that discharge into a bucket of water are sold for apartments, and they are a bad idea for a gas dryer under any circumstance because they release combustion byproducts into the living space. Even for an electric dryer they dump several gallons of water vapor per week into a basement, feeding mold and rot in exactly the Chicago homes that can least afford it.

A realistic maintenance schedule

Clean the lint screen every load, wash it with soap and water twice a year to remove dryer sheet residue that blocks airflow invisibly, and have the full duct run cleaned every one to two years, or annually for a large household. If the dryer itself is overheating, cycling on the thermal fuse, or no longer heating at all after a blockage, have the fuse, thermostat, and element checked together — a blown thermal fuse is almost always the symptom of an airflow problem, not the cause.
