Dryer takes two cycles to dry clothes? Here is why

A dryer that needs two or three cycles is burning double the energy and wearing out twice as fast. Before assuming the machine is dying, work through these checks. In our experience most of these calls trace back to something outside the dryer itself.

Confirm the washer is extracting properly

If clothes come out of the washer heavier and wetter than they should, the dryer never had a chance. A washer that fails to reach full spin speed, whether from a worn belt, a failing motor, or repeated balance retries, leaves several extra pounds of water in each load. Pull a towel from the washer and wring it. Water running out means start there.

Check airflow at the exterior vent hood

With the dryer running, go outside and put your hand near the hood. You should feel strong, warm, steady air and the damper should be pushed fully open. Weak flow means a restricted duct. Also verify the hood has no bird screen or mesh, which clogs solid with lint, and that no nest or debris is packed behind the damper.

Clean the lint screen and the screen housing

Dryer sheets leave an invisible film on the lint screen that blocks air even when it looks clean. Run water over the screen; if it pools instead of passing straight through, scrub it with soap and a soft brush. Then vacuum the slot the screen drops into, which collects a surprising amount of packed lint below the visible area.

Clean the moisture sensor bars

Sensor dry cycles measure conductivity between two metal strips inside the drum. Fabric softener and detergent residue coat those strips and make the load read dry when it is not, ending the cycle early. Wipe them with rubbing alcohol on a cloth. If timed dry works well and auto cycles do not, this is very likely your culprit.

Stop overloading

Clothes need room to tumble and let hot air pass between them. A drum packed more than about two-thirds full turns the load into a single tumbling mass that dries from the outside in. Splitting one huge load into two smaller ones frequently finishes faster in total than forcing the oversized load through repeat cycles.

Weak heat rather than no heat

On an electric dryer, a heating element with one broken coil section can still produce partial heat, giving you a machine that dries slowly instead of not at all. A cycling thermostat drifting out of spec does the same. If airflow is verified good and the load is reasonable, this is where a technician will measure next.

Is it cheaper to run two short cycles or one long one?

One correctly sized cycle. Every restart repeats the warm-up phase, which is the most energy-intensive part of the run.

Do dryer balls help?

Modestly. They improve tumbling separation, which can trim a few minutes, but they will not compensate for restricted airflow.

Why did drying time increase suddenly?

A sudden change usually means a physical restriction, such as a crushed transition duct after the dryer was pushed back, or a blocked exterior hood.
