A refrigerator that runs but will not cool is one of the most common calls we get across Chicagoland. Before you lose a fridge full of groceries, here are the seven most likely causes and what to check first.

Dirty condenser coils

When the coils under or behind the fridge are caked with dust, the unit cannot release heat and struggles to cool. Unplug the fridge and vacuum the coils every 6–12 months — this simple step fixes a surprising number of "not cooling" complaints.

Blocked air vents

Overpacking the freezer or fridge blocks the vents that move cold air between compartments. Leave a few inches of space around the vents so air can circulate.

Faulty evaporator fan

If the freezer is cold but the fridge is warm, the evaporator fan may have failed. You will often hear no fan noise, or a loud buzzing when the door opens. This usually needs a technician.

Bad door gasket

A torn or loose door seal lets warm air leak in. Close the door on a dollar bill — if it slides out easily, the gasket needs replacing.

Thermostat or control board

A failed temperature control or main control board can stop the compressor from running. This is a diagnostic best left to a professional.

Low refrigerant / sealed system

A refrigerant leak in the sealed system is less common but serious. It requires an EPA-certified technician — never attempt a recharge yourself.

Compressor failure

If the compressor is hot but not running, it may have failed. On older units, repair cost should be weighed against replacement.
