Chest freezer not freezing: a step-by-step diagnosis

If yours is running but not holding temperature, these are the checks that matter, roughly in the order a technician would perform them.
Confirm it is really warm
Do not trust the built-in dial. Put an appliance thermometer in the center of the load and read it after four hours. A chest freezer should sit at 0°F or below. If it reads 10-20°F, you have a performance problem. If it reads 32°F or above, you likely have a failed component rather than a marginal condition.
Check power and the outlet
Basement and garage freezers are often on GFCI outlets or circuits shared with a workshop, and a nuisance trip is a genuinely common cause of a thawed freezer. Test the outlet with something else, and never plug a freezer into an extension cord or a switched receptacle. Also check that the temperature dial has not been bumped by a stored box.
Look at the condenser and airflow
Many chest freezers run condenser tubing bonded to the outer cabinet skin, which is why the sides feel warm during operation. Pushed tight against a wall or boxed in by storage, that heat has nowhere to go. Give the unit several inches on all sides. On models with a rear coil, vacuum it, since garage and basement dust builds up fast.
Listen for the compressor and relay
A compressor that hums for a few seconds then clicks off, repeating every few minutes, indicates a failing start relay or an overheating compressor. A compressor that never runs at all while the light works points to the thermostat, the relay, or the compressor itself. Relay and overload replacement is a common $175-$300 repair on these units.
Inspect the lid seal and hinges
Chest freezer lids are heavy and their gaskets compress unevenly over time. Check for frost forming along one edge of the opening, which shows exactly where air is leaking. Also make sure the lid is not being held a fraction of an inch open by an overfilled basket, which is a surprisingly frequent cause of a slow thaw.
Manual defrost models need manual defrost
Most chest freezers are not frost-free. Once ice on the walls exceeds about a quarter inch, cooling efficiency drops noticeably. Plan to defrost once or twice a year: move food to coolers, unplug, prop the lid, and let it thaw with towels down. Never chip ice with a knife or screwdriver, since the evaporator tubing sits just behind the liner.
Save the food while you diagnose
A full chest freezer holds safe temperature for about 48 hours unopened, and a half-full one for about 24. Keep the lid shut, group packages tightly together, and add bagged ice or dry ice if the repair will take longer. Anything still holding ice crystals can generally be refrozen safely.
