Washing machine shaking and banging during spin: causes and fixes

Violent shaking on the spin cycle is more than a noise complaint. Each hard impact stresses the tub bearing, the suspension, and the cabinet, so a machine left shaking for months often turns into a much bigger repair. Work through these checks in order.

Check the leveling feet and the floor

Set a level across the top of the machine front to back and side to side. All four feet must carry weight with no rock. Adjust the front feet by hand and lock the jam nuts; many rear feet are self-leveling and set themselves when you tip the machine forward and lower it. On a springy wood subfloor, a plywood platform under the pair often solves it outright.

Remove shipping bolts on a new front-loader

Front-load washers ship with three or four steel transit bolts through the back panel that lock the drum to the cabinet. If they are still in place on a newly installed machine, the first spin cycle sounds catastrophic. Remove them, cap the holes with the supplied plugs, and keep them in case you ever move. This is the most common new-install complaint.

Load balance and what you are washing

A single heavy item such as a bath mat, comforter, or pair of jeans slings to one side and creates a huge imbalance at 1,000 rpm and up. Wash bulky items with two or three smaller pieces to distribute weight, and avoid wrapping sheets into a rope. Modern washers will re-attempt balancing several times, which is also why a load can take much longer than expected.

Worn shock absorbers or suspension rods

Front-loaders use two to four dampers between tub and base; top-loaders typically use four suspension rods with dome caps. When the damping fluid or friction pads wear out, the tub keeps oscillating instead of settling. Push down on the empty tub and release it. If it bounces more than once or twice, the suspension is worn. Expect $280 to $450 for replacement.

Tub bearing failure

A bearing that is going bad produces a rumbling, jet-engine roar that rises with spin speed, usually with some drum play when you rock it by hand at the twelve and six oclock positions. This is not a wait-and-see item, because a seized bearing can damage the outer tub and spider arm. On many front-loaders the repair cost pushes the machine into replacement territory.

When shaking means stop using it

If the machine physically moves across the floor, if the drum contacts the cabinet, or if the noise is a metallic grinding, stop running spin cycles until it is inspected. Continued use turns a suspension repair into a tub and bearing job. A quick diagnostic is far cheaper than replacing the machine a year early.

Frequently asked questions

Do anti-vibration pads actually help?

They help with floor noise transfer on a level machine, but they will not fix worn shocks, bad leveling, or a failing bearing. Diagnose first.

Why does only the spin cycle shake?

Imbalance forces scale sharply with speed. A wobble that is invisible during wash becomes violent once the drum passes several hundred rpm.

Can shaking break the machine?

Yes. Sustained impact loading wears the bearing, cracks the spider arm on front-loaders, and loosens cabinet fasteners and hose connections.
