Cooking appliances fail from neglect far more often than from age. Grease, spilled food, and worn seals cause a surprising share of the service calls that come in. This checklist is organized by how often each task actually needs doing, so you can build it into a routine rather than tackling everything at once.

Monthly: door gasket and seal check

Run your hand along the oven door gasket, the braided rope seal around the cavity opening. It should feel springy and compress evenly. Flattened, torn, or hardened sections let heat escape, which shows up as slow preheating and uneven baking. A simple test: close the door on a dollar bill and pull. If it slides out with no resistance anywhere, the seal is done.

Monthly: range hood grease filter

Pull the metal mesh filters and run them through the dishwasher or soak in hot water with degreaser. A clogged filter forces the blower to work harder, kills ventilation performance, and on over-the-range microwaves it drives heat back into the unit, which shortens magnetron life. This is a ten-minute task with outsized benefits.

Quarterly: burner grates, caps, and drip pans

On gas ranges, soak the grates and burner caps in hot soapy water and clear the burner ports with a paperclip. On electric coil ranges, replace drip pans that are pitted or badly discolored, since clean reflective pans meaningfully improve heating efficiency. Wipe the area under the cooktop where spills collect and can reach wiring.

Twice a year: oven door hinges and alignment

Open the door slowly and watch for it dropping or feeling gritty. Sagging hinges break the door seal and are a leading cause of heat loss. Check that the door sits square against the frame with even gaps on both sides. Hinges are replaced in pairs, and catching a worn one early prevents the glass panel damage that follows a door that slams.

Twice a year: check the anti-tip bracket

Freestanding ranges must be secured with an anti-tip bracket anchored to the floor or wall, engaging a leg or rear foot. This prevents the range from tipping when weight is put on an open door. Slide the range forward slightly and confirm the bracket is present and engaged. If it is missing, order one and install it, since this is a real injury hazard.

Yearly: gas burner flame inspection

Light each gas burner and look at the flame in dim light. It should be sharp blue with a small light-blue inner cone and no more than a slight yellow tip. Persistently yellow or orange flames, soot on the bottom of pans, or a flame that lifts away from the ports means combustion is off and a technician should inspect the burner and air shutter.

Yearly: microwave vents and turntable drive

Vacuum the exterior vent grilles on the microwave, since blocked airflow causes thermal cutoffs to trip. Check that the turntable rotates smoothly and the roller ring is not cracked. On recirculating over-the-range models, replace the charcoal filter annually, since it is not washable and does nothing once saturated.

Frequently asked questions

Does maintenance really extend appliance life?

Meaningfully, yes. Grease-related failures and heat-related component stress are among the most common repair causes, and both are largely preventable.

Should I use oven cleaner on the gasket?

No. Caustic oven cleaner degrades the gasket fiber and damages temperature sensors. Keep sprays away from the gasket, sensor probe, and elements.

How do I know when to replace a drip pan versus clean it?

Replace when the pan is warped, pitted through, or so discolored that scrubbing no longer restores a reflective surface. They cost only a few dollars each.
