Oven not heating up? How to find the real cause

You set the oven to 375, walk away, and come back to a lukewarm cavity and a dinner that is going nowhere. The frustrating part is that the display looks perfectly normal, the fan may be running, and nothing seems obviously broken. In most cases the fault is one specific component, and a few quick observations will tell you which.

Start by watching the bake element

On an electric oven, pull the racks and look at the bottom element while the oven preheats. A healthy bake element glows evenly orange within two to three minutes. If it stays dark, glows only in patches, or shows a blistered break in the metal sheath, the element has failed. This is the single most common cause of no heat in electric ovens and it is a genuinely straightforward part to replace.

Check whether the broiler still works

Run the broiler for 60 seconds and watch the top element. If broil heats normally but bake does not, you have effectively proven the control board, thermostat, and power supply are fine, because both elements share those. That isolates the problem to the bake element itself or its wiring. If neither element heats, the fault is upstream: control board, relay, or a lost leg of power.

Electric ovens and half-power problems

Electric ranges use 240 volts delivered as two 120-volt legs. If one leg is lost at the breaker or in the cord, the surface burners and lights often still work while the oven cannot heat. If your cooktop is fine but the oven is dead and the clock displays normally, ask a technician to test both legs at the terminal block before assuming an element failure.

Gas ovens: watch the igniter, not the flame

A gas oven igniter both lights the gas and acts as the switch that opens the safety valve. As it ages it still glows but draws less current, and once it drops below roughly 3.2 to 3.6 amps the valve never opens. The tell is an igniter that glows bright orange for more than 90 seconds with no flame following. That igniter is failing even though it looks alive.

The temperature sensor tells the board what to do

Most modern ovens use an RTD sensor, a small probe in the upper rear of the cavity. It reads about 1080 ohms at room temperature. If it reads open or wildly out of range, the board may refuse to fire the element at all or shut heat off early. A sensor that has been knocked and is touching the oven wall reads the wall, not the air, and causes strange heating too.

When it is the control board

If both elements are dead, power is confirmed good, and the sensor checks out, attention turns to the electronic control board and its bake relay. Relays fail with burned contacts, often visible as a scorched spot on the board. Boards run $180 to $450 installed in 2026, which is why a technician should confirm the diagnosis rather than replace it on a guess.

A bake element replacement runs about $180 to $320 including the part and labor. A gas oven igniter is generally $210 to $380. Temperature sensors are cheaper, around $160 to $260. Diagnostic fees in the Chicagoland area typically run $80 to $110 and are usually credited toward the repair if you go ahead with it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace an oven bake element myself?

Many people can, provided the range is fully unplugged or the breaker is off and you carefully note the wire positions. If the wires are burned or the terminal block is damaged, stop and call a technician.

Why does my oven heat but take forever to preheat?

A weakening element, a sensor reading high, or a bad door gasket letting heat escape all cause slow preheat. Check the gasket first since it is free to inspect.

Is a 20-year-old oven worth repairing?

Often yes, if the repair is a single part under about $350 and the cabinet and door are sound. Older ovens tend to have simpler, more repairable designs.
